Reading books faster

As one who is needs to read a lot nowadays and tends to be very slow at reading, I find it useful to time myself by line and by page. When I have a timer with me that tracks the time between page turns, I find I can read a book in half the time. Moreover, I find it easiest to achieve a good page turning speed if I limit myself to, say, a five second maximum per line read.

The drawback of this method is that it does not allow for my eye to wander and cross-reference, and it does not allow for me to think and reflect. However, reading the book twice at double the speed would more than compensate if necessary, in my opinion.
