Invention of Glass - Historical Inventions and Ideas Series, Idea 10

The invention of glass was of great importance to the development of modern science. It is a vital part of many scientific apparatuses such as the microscope and the telescope.

Although some elementary forms of glasses existed for thousands of years, it wasn't until the end of the 13th century that glass making techniques were good enough to craft spectacles. This would eventually lead to the invention of the microscope and the telescope in the 17th century.

Good point. I think that the Hubble Space telescope, with its awesome images of the early cosmos, is a good example of this.
